Fiona Howe trained as a classical pianist and flautist alongside a degree in literature. Her grandmother sang and played jazz piano, passing on her gift for improvisation and a taste for blue notes.
Fiona began songwriting in tandem with her film composition. Her début album Mermaid’s Work was released in 2016, eight songs exploring the connection between the female psyche and the sea, a kaleidoscope of emotional colours shifting and moving with the ebb and flow of the tide, creating an intimate, mysterious sound. Her second album, Madness, Death or Poetry, twelve songs about love, creativity and the word, will be released on 6th July 2024. The songs are accessible and melodic yet scored sparingly, with violin and cello underpinning and interweaving the vocal and piano lines with occasional colour from flute and guitar.
Fiona is an established independent film producer, her most recent credits being a trilogy of feature films for which she has also composed and performed the soundtrack music: Desire (Nominated Best UK Feature, Raindance Film Festival), Delight (Nominated Best Feature, Moscow International Film Festival) and most recently a full orchestral/choral score for Delirium (world première, official selection Moscow International Film Festival 2017). The Delirium soundtrack album 'Requiem For The Living' was released in April 2017 ahead of the film's UK première, and was nominated Best Original Score for a Drama Feature, 2017 Reel Music Awards.
She is currently active on a number of other projects including composition of the songs and music score for stage musical The Bellgirl, the film version of her novel She Danced, structured around a collection of love songs, as well as choral suite Shakespeare's Daughters and solo piano collection Songs of Winter.
